United Country Regan

History

William & James Fulton, wild horse hunters, along with John Stevens & Charles Jesse “Buffalo” Jones were able to convince the ATSF railroad to place a switch station in Garden City; thus began the rush of homesteaders moving to the area in the late 1800s. With the presence of the United States Land office in Garden City settlement remained at high levels and the city’s growth has continued into the present day.

Area Amenities

Garden City features a main downtown on southern Main Street featuring the historic Windsor Hotel in addition to a commercial downtown which is home to many national retailers such as Menards, Sears, Target, Staples, Home Depot, Wal-Mart, Sam's Club, J.C. Penny and more.

The educational needs are met by the Garden City Public Schools System and its 16 public schools that serve K-12 students. Within Garden City they are also two private schools, St. Mary Catholic School and St. Dominic Catholic School, both elementary schools.

Garden City Community College is a fully accredited community college and is a member of the Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference.


St. Catherine Hospital is a state-of-the-art facility providing critical care service to Western Kansas, Eastern Colorado and the Oklahoma Panhandle. Services provided include Orthopedic, Otolaryngology, Ophthalmology and general surgery to name a few.

Agriculture drives the local economy, while the largest employers in the city include, Tyson Foods, Unified School District 457 and Cheyenne Drilling.

Recreation

The outdoors invite a variety of interests in Garden City. There are a total of 11 public parks covering more than 300 acres, “The Big Pool” (Garden City’s municipal swimming pool) and a 3 ½-mile walking path within city limits. Buffalo Dunes Golf Course is an 18-hole course with approximately 20,000 rounds played at the facility each year. The Golf Course at Southwind is a favorite among touring golfers and is the host site of the Southwest Kansas Pro-Am.

The Garden City Wind brought minor league baseball to town in 2015 as a member of the Pecos League.

Animal enthusiasts will enjoy time at either at Sandsage Bison Range Wildlife Area or Lee Richardson Zoo. The wildlife area is 3,760 acres and provides visitors an opportunity to view the sandsage prairie ecosystem. Area features the oldest publicly owned bison herd in Kansas. Referred to as an “oasis on the plain of Kansas,” Lee Richardson Zoo is the largest of its kind in Western Kansas covering over 50 acres.

Local Climate

Garden City features a semi-arid steppe climate, meaning hot, dry summers and cold, dry winters. Januarys is the coldest month on average, while July is the hottest and June the wettest. Rainfall is around 19.5 inches with an average snowfall of approximately 24 inches per year.
